Eng 181 Introduction to Literary Forms

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course aims at providing students with an introduction to literature, especially the three main genres: fiction (short stories), poetry, and drama. Students are introduced to the elements of each genre and are trained to trace these elements in specific works. The primary purpose of the course is to provide the students with a foundation of elementary skills necessary for the reading of literature, those skills that will be more fully developed in the following introductory courses.
Course Aims and Objectives:
Students will:
1. Identify the three main genres of literature: fiction (short stories), poetry, and drama.
2. Discuss the three main genres of literature: fiction (short stories), poetry, and drama.
3. Analyze elements of each genre and trace these elements in specific works.
4. Read literature both analytically and responsively.
Assessment
Class work: 60% consists of 2 mid-terms and class work
Final exam: 40%
