A Novel Sustainability Oriented Model for Evaluating Existing Buildings
A Novel Sustainability Oriented Model for Evaluating Existing Buildings
Buildings consume a lot of energy and electricity and in turn, contribute to a significant portion of global CO2 levels. A building's operation also accounts for about 80 %, on average, of global environmental impact. As a result, the construction and maintenance of sustainable buildings have been the focus of researchers in recent years as well as the development of technologies to evaluate the sustainability of buildings. Current technologies however focus on economic and organizational sustainability evaluation, not on user's evaluation. Hence, the objective of this study was to develop an automated tool for sustainability assessment, that is, a user-based Sustainability Assessment and Upgrading Tool (USAUT). It takes into account some factors such as thermal comfort, aesthetics, and lighting, among others. This tool, together with the current technologies, will provide a more holistic sustainability evaluation of buildings and enable facility managers to upgrade their buildings as needed.
