Graduate Orthodontic Clinic

POS 541 (Orthodontic Clinic I) – This course will prepare students for their first experience in clinical orthodontic practice.
a. Orthodontic Technique (First Semester-First Year)
This course is offered in the first semester of the first year. It will introduce students to orthodontic terminology and familiarize them with the most commonly used instruments in the orthodontic clinic. Students will be asked to perform and master basic wire bending skills, design, construction, fabrication and management of basic fixed and removable appliances. Also, students will receive hands-on training on orthodontic record taking and its analysis. Indications and contraindication of commonly used techniques and appliances will be discussed, including standard edgewise, straight wire, removable, functional and auxiliary orthodontic appliances.
b. Orthodontic Clinic (End of the First Semester and the Second Semester-First year)
The students will start their clinical training at the end of the first semester of the first year. Each student will start a minimum of 70 orthodontic cases. Students should prepare the full records of each new patient, formulate a problem list and treatment objectives. Then discuss and present the case to the assigned clinical instructor. Also, presentation of cases by graduate students in a group discussion will be required. The instructor will approve and sign the treatment plan. No cases under any circumstances can be started without the approval and signature of the instructor. Students at the end of the first year will receive transfer cases from the graduating third year students.

POS 549 (Orthodontic Clinic II) – (First and Second Semester-Second Year)
This course is considered a continuation of a series of clinical courses offered to the postgraduate students. Students will continue work up of the cases and presentation in group discussion will be required. The students will continue the treatment procedures of the patients that were started in the previous clinical courses.

POS 553 (Orthodontic Clinic III) – (First and Second Semester-Third Year)
This course is considered as a continuation of all previous orthodontic clinical courses. In this clinical course, students will continue treatment of their cases. The treatment plans approved by the supervising clinical instructors should continue without any changes. During the second semester, graduate students should start finishing their cases. At the end of the semester, students will start writing up transfer reports of the few unfinished cases to the new batch of postgraduate students. These reports should be signed by the supervising clinical instructor.
