Course description CHS - 369
This is a practical course where student will learn how to integrate previous knowledge and acquire skills necessary for hospital work as dietitian .The course focuses on nutritional assessment, planning intervention and follow-up patients for variety of medical conditions including; Obesity, Diabetes Mellitus, renal diseases, liver diseases, gastrointestinal conditions.

Case Study
Mohammed 40 years old, weighing 55 Kg, Ht 170 cm. a known case of liver cirrhosis, presented with neuromuscular manifestations, dementia, ascites, jaundice, severe loss of appetite, nausea and steatorrhea . Past medical history of GERD due to frequent episodes of vomiting which further interferes with his dietary intake. Pt admitted to the hospital for further investigations.
He was admitted to the hospital on 3 Decmber 2012; at 11 am in ward 22 A, Room 2-Bed 2 with medical number 23-66-89
His nurse informs the doctor about his last Temp (39.5 C˚) and BP (110/70 mmHg) which was at 12 am, on 3 Decembr.
Abnormal laboratory values include:
Elevated liver enzymes (↑ ALT = 85 U/L, ↑ AST = 100 U/L), total Billirubin (↑ 5 mg/dl) and Ammonia (↑NH3= 70 mmol/L).
Reduced Albumin level (↓2.5 g/dl), hemoglobin (↓HGB = 10.9 g/dl) and blood urea nitrogen
(↓ BUN = 5 mg/dl).
∆ Hepatic encephalopathy – stage 1, liver cirrhosis.
