ENG 343: Shakespeare

An introduction to Shakespeare through close reading of at least one comedy and one tragedy. We read the plays as scripts written for a working theater: how the verse and prose move, how scenes are built, and how disguise, soliloquy, and dramatic irony control what the audience knows and when. Elizabethan stagecraft and habits of thought supply the context. The aim is that students can open a Shakespeare play on their own, read it with confidence, and argue about it in writing.
