The course introduces students to the general concept of discourse, the approaches to discourse analysis, and different tools of inquiry providing them with some basic theoretical knowledge that can develop their skills in analyzing different types of spoken and written discourse. Moreover, the course explores the ways in which language varies according to subject area, social setting, communicative purposes and the social roles and identities of speakers/writers involved.
