DEH 474 ORAL HYGIENE AND COMMUNITY DENTISTRY
A lecture and practical course that covers dental public health and its role in promoting the values of oral and general health to the public and organizations within and outside the profession. It teaches the students to educate other individuals and/or organizations about the assessment, access and delivery of services in the provision of oral health care, present educational information to diverse client populations including special needs, in a variety of settings using appropriate teaching strategies, explain the value of statistics in research studies, evaluate statistical research from professional journals and publications, analyze statistical methods used in scientific literature and relate their significance to the literature. Emphasis will be placed on the dental hygienists role in the community as an advocate of health education and dental care. Practical sessions will require the student to develop and present programs in community dentistry for target populations such as prenatal and postnatal women; school aged children, the aged as well as the general population.
