Syllabus Chem 583    Polymer Processing  3(2+1)
Concise Rheological and mechanical properties, different methods used in polymer processing e.g. extrusion, blowing, and reforming. The effect of processing parameters on the properties of the final products. Standard methods used for testing the properties of the final products e.g. ASTM and others. Experiments on polymers processing and measuring some of the mechanical properties of polymers. Arranging of some visits to production and processing facilities in the industrial zones.
 
Detailed Rheological properties: Factors affecting rheology, (e.g. temperature, time, diluents, etc), viscosity, creep and stress relaxation, yield stress, viscoelastic effects, memory effects, shear thinning and thickening behaviors, normal stress, die swelling,  Mechanical properties: Stress-strain relationships, elastic and plastic deformation, modulus, tension, compression, shear, torsion, yield, tensile and fracture strength, ductility, hardness, toughness, brittleness, stiffness, resilience,  Different methods used in polymer processing  e.g extrusion, blowing, and reforming: Thermoset and thermoplastic processes, various steps of processing, distribution and dispersion, melt fracture, die swell, bambooing, process memory, Deborah and Reynolds numbers, melt flow index The effect of processing parameters on the properties of the final products: Temperature, pressure, cooling rate, shear, residence time, design of processing equipment parts Standard methods used for testing the properties of the final products e.g. ASTM and others: chemical, mechanical, thermal, analytical, optical, and electrical. Experiments on polymers processing and measuring some of the mechanical properties of polymers. Arranging of some visits to production and processing facilities in the industrial zones.
