BCH 445- Biochemistry of Nutrition

Main objective of this course is to study elements of nutrition – Macro nutrients, micronutrients with
special emphasis on biochemical fundamentals of nutrition. The course aims to study the roles of
carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals in health and disease conditions related to
metabolism of these nutrients. This course also aims to study nutrition and energy requirements of
different age groups, special nutrition during different physiological conditions like pregnancy,
lactation and some metabolism related diseases, Calorie contents of foods, energy expenditure,
concepts of BMR, BMI, obesity, electrolyte balance and related conditions like malnutrition
Identify different types of source of nutrition and recognize nutritional status of a nation and outline
nutritional intervention by governments, list government bodies regulating the quality of foods
List biochemical and physiological role of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, outline their classification,
digestion and absorption, recognize the effects of malnutrition
List biochemical and physiological role of micronutrients like vitamins, minerals, outline their
classification, absorption, storage and diseases associated with malnutrition
Compare energy content of different food groups, how to calculate calorie content of a food, explain
the role of calories in disease conditions like obesity, interpret energy expenditure and requirement by
BMI and BMR
Analyze and evaluate different food groups in lab
Research of literature for advancements in nutritional support during metabolism related disease
conditions
