This study aimed at investigating the impact of learning foreign languages on the attitudes of Yarmouk University students. More specifically, it aimed at investigating the impact of learning English and French on the students' attitudes towards the native speakers of these target languages, towards the Western culture and towards learning these languages. Another purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of gender, religion and residential place on students' attitudes.

A sample of 150 students, 100 studying English as a foreign language and 50 studying French as a foreign language, served as the respondents to a  five-point Lekert scale questionnaire in order to elicit the data necessary to achieve the purposes of the study. This questionnaire consisted of 40 items; it was based on Flaitz (1988), Olshtain et al. (1990), Gardner and Maclntyre (1991) and Al-Abed Al-Haq and Smadi (1996).
