B Objectives
|
1. Summary of the main learning outcomes for students enrolled in the course.
This course aims at providing students with practical training in advanced translation from English to Arabic and vice versa in the field of computer.
Students are trained to analyze and translate authentic texts that include structures related to information processing computer hardware and software, and especially software applications. They are introduced to computer-related dictionaries. The stylistic features of the domain are emphasized. |

2. Briefly describe any plans for developing and improving the course that are being implemented. (eg increased use of IT or web based reference material, changes in content as a result of new research in the field)
Varying the choice of the different authentic texts in order to cover the different axis in the field of computer according to new equipments, softwares and applications used.

C. Course Description
This course aims at providing students with practical training in advanced translation from Arabic to the target language and vice versa. Texts used for practical applications include diversified axis such as the hardware, the software, the applications, the Internet, the programming languages, etc. Students are introduced to the stylistic and structural features of this kind of scientific writing and even the literary procedures found in these texts e.g., the use of different figures of speech, the idiomatic expressions and proverbs used in this field.
The students are also trained to get acquainted with the computer dictionaries and the web sites related to the field.

1. Develop the ability to translate different types of texts from English into Arabic and vice versa
2. Develop the students’ skills of speed, accuracy and fidelity. |

1. Analyse thoroughly the texts to be translated to enable the students to understand the texts in order to translate
2. Lead students to apply different strategies to overcome the problems they encounter in the process of translating (syntax, terminology, etc.)
3. Introduce specialized and general terms in the process of translation
4. Use monolingual dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, specialized dictionaries, and different electronic dictionaries on the Internet and specialized websites.
5. Introduce the different stylistic features of the scientific register related to the computer.
6. Encourage the use of parallel texts in search for equivalent technical terms and expressions
7. Weekly assignments are given to students to be discussed in class.
8. Once in the semester students are given a text in class to work in groups (cooperative learning) and then discuss their work in class to pin point the difficulties encountered.
9. Students are asked at the end of the semester to present a project comparing between an original text and the translation (published or on the Internet) |

1. The ability to identify the different difficulties and to recognize the different linguistic devices used in English and Arabic to overcome these difficulties.

1. Guide the students to analyse the scientific text and identify the different devices used
2. Find the equivalent for the idiomatic expressions and the proverbs used in different texts

Provide the students with a variety of text types that represent different axis related to the computer
Provide the students with texts that follow a certain progression in the difficulties presented
Ask the students to find themselves on the Internet, texts related to the different axis studied
Familiarize the students with different devices used to transfer the new concepts introduced in different texts such as borrowing and transliteration, etc.

Demonstrate the necessity of taking care of the clarity of expression, using correct grammar, vocabulary and punctuation
