Course Description :
This course focuses on the basic concepts and principles of professional nursing. It introduces the students to the nurse's roles, nursing theories, nursing process, health and wellness concepts, as well as the legal and ethical aspects of nursing.
The health care system and the history of nursing will be explored with emphasis on K.S.A. In addition, the course introduces the students to the application of the nursing process in meeting the basic needs of individuals. Critical thinking and problem-based learning will be encouraged.
Course objectives:
Upon completion of this course, each student will be able to:
1. Examine the nature and components of professional nursing.
2. Describe the historical development of the nursing profession in the world .
3. Discuss the structure and, functions of the health care system in K.S.A.
4. Explore theories essential to professional nursing practice.
5. Describe the critical thinking process and its relevance to nursing.
6. Identify personal and professional values, and legal and ethical standards that influence nursing practice and the delivery of health care.
7. Analyze the concepts and steps of the nursing process.
8. Describe the principles underlying effective documenting and reporting.
9. Describe the principles and significance of measuring vital signs.
10. Identify the principles of infection control, hygiene, and safety.
11. Discuss basic concepts and principles related to nutrition, fluid and electrolyte balance, and elimination.
12. Discuss basic concepts and principles related to activity and exercise, rest and sleep, oxygenation, and stress and coping.

Course Policy:
Attendance and preparation are important for successful completion of this
course. A absences must be kept to a minimum. Excessive absenteeism is
grounds for dismissal from the course. Students are expected to attend all
classes on time. Students are expected to participate enthusiastically and
meaningfully in classroom.
