Course Description
This course discusses the concepts, types and protocols of computer networks and about Internet technology; social and ethical issues in computing; the phases and tools of system development life cycle; the concepts and levels of programming languages and major programming languages including object-oriented programming
Course Objectives
LECTURE
- Describe the basic components of a network
- Explain the methods of data transmission, types of signals and modulation
- Discuss the various communication media and protocols
- Discuss the various network configurations – LAN, WAN, MAN
- Discuss the components, types and protocols of a local area network (LAN)
- Explain what is needed to start Internet connection and what an Internet service provider does
- Discuss the functions of a browser and how to search the Internet
- Discuss the various types of e-commerce and advertising on Internet
- Describe the workplace issues of ergonomics and significance of ethics in computing
- Describe the principal functions of the system analyst
- List and describe the phases of systems development life cycle
- Explain the process of writing programs
- List and describe the levels of programming languages – machine, assembly, high-level, very high-level, natural
- Discuss major programming languages used today and also discuss the concepts of object-oriented programming
LAB
In lab the MS-Office applications of Excel and Access are practiced along with the basic file management.
Attendance Policy
All students must have a minimum of 75% attendance, failing which may result in debarring from the course.

Major Exams, Assignments,
Quizzes, Lab sessions: 50%
Final Exam: 50%
