Interns OMFS Clinical Rotation
It is our pleasure to welcome all training interns at the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In the new changes in the rotation program, Interns are given equal responsibility and opportunity comparable to that of OMFS residents. The goal of the rotation is to provide general clinical and didactic experiences in the whole spectrum of the specialty. Exposure to inpatient hospital service is also provided with participation in managing patient with trauma, orthognathic surgery, tempromandibular joint disorders, reconstructive surgery, facial esthetic surgery, and treatment of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
By joining the Division of OMFS interns are mandatory required to fulfill the following requirements:
1- Attending all Consultant clinics
a. Sunday am: Dr Nasser Nooh
b. Monday am: Prof. Khalid Elsayed
c. Tuesday am: Prof. Khalid Al-Ruhaimi
d. Wednesday pm: Dr. Mohammed Elshall
Interns are supposed to come to the clinic on time, take the patient's history and do the examination and discuss the need for special investigations. No treatment should be provided to the patients without permission from the Consultant.
2- Attending operating theatre sessions
a. Saturday
b. Monday
c. Tuesday
3- Attending ward rounds with the OMFS team
4- Submitting the following reports to the OMFS secretary (All forms are available at the OMFS secretary office)
a. Weekly reports
i. Cases seen and managed in the Consultants clinics
ii. Cases managed during on call duties
iii. Detailed operation report for each patient operated in KKUH or KAUH
b. Daily reports about the status of admitted OMFS patients in KKUH or KAUH.
5- Clerking new hospital patients: new patients are usually admitted to the hospital 2-3 days before the operation day. You are required to see these patients, complete their admission requirement (History, examination, investigations, consultations and submitting the operations list to the OR reception). In case that the patient requires ICU bed you need to arrange with ICU staff one week before the operation day.
6- Seminars and articles review
a. Giving an updated review seminar in one of the OMFS topics
b. Weekly article review with the OMFS team
7- On call duties: you are required to do a minimum of 30 days on calls during your rotation. On call schedule will be available each month and you be given a bleep. During your on cal duty you are supposed to be available 24h to answer any calls from the Accident and Emergency Department at KKUH or KAUH or from the hospital wards. The on call system at the OMFS Division include the followings
a. 1st on call (interns, residents and registrars)
b. 2nd on call (Senior registrars)
c. 3rd on call (Consultants)
You will be the first to be contacted by the Accident and Emergency Department. After seeing the patient and doing the proper emergency examination you have to inform the 2nd on call about the case.
