PHCL 520: DRUG INFORMATION AND RESEARCH DESIGN (1+1)

 

     AIM OF THE COURSE  

This course is designed to provide the student with practical experience in systematic literature retrieval, critical assessment of literature, and research design.

 

           OBJECTIVES          

 

After the completion of this course, the student should be able to:

 

  1. Describe and evaluate different literature retrieval systems.

  2. Understand the concepts and differences between the following statistical tests:

    • Parametric tests

    • Nonparametric test

    • Regression analysis

 

  1. Understand the pharmacoepidemiological principles essential to design clinical studies and surveys.

 

        Course Contents      

 

  1. Answering drug information inquiries and poison calls.

  2. Literature retrieval systems. (1 week)   

                   a)    Manual systems

                   b)    Computerized databases (on-line search)

  1. Literature evaluation. (1 week)

                   a)    Study assessment

                   b)    Test assessment

                   c)    ADR reports

  1. Review of statistical concepts used in clinical trials. (5 weeks)

                   a)    Descriptive statistics

                   b)    Inferential statistics: Parametric and nonparametric 

  1. Pharmacoepidemiology (5 weeks)

                   a)    Introductory concepts

                   b)    Survey methods

                   c)    Clinical trials

                   d)    DUR

                   e)    Post-marketing surveillance

             6.   How to write clinical papers and reports for publication. (1 week)
