This course is designed to introduce the pharmacy students to the dietary supplements such as vitamins, minerals and natural antioxidants through studying their sources, chemical characteristics and medicinal uses. The course will help students to understand the mechanism of actions and how these intrinsic molecules conduct their essential physiological functions in the human body. During this course the relationship between these molecules and their functions, deficiencies, toxicities and therapeutic uses will be discussed. Additionally, the course will also focus on some of the pharmaceutical natural products available clinically, their sources, chemical compositions, pharmacological activities and side effects. By completing this course, students should acquire a good knowledge on dietary supplements. This will help them to understand the physiological and therapeutic functions of these products to provide an effective clinical service by offering patients with safe drugs as well as useful consultation.
