CCH 101:  Clinical Chemistry for Nursing (2+2) credit-hours

Laboratory safety. Laboratory calculations, acids, bases, buffers and pH value. Chemical and physical techniques. Structure and properties of amino acids and proteins, analysis of serum proteins, biuret method for total proteins, estimation of serum albumin. Structure, classification and properties of carbohydrates, various tests for their analysis, determination of glucose in blood and urine. Definition, properties and classification of lipids. Iodine number, saponification value, acid value. Estimation of blood cholesterol and serum fatty acids. Structure and function of nucleic acids, DNA and RNA. Vitamins and their role in human health, water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins and their recommended dietary requirements.

BCH 231: Biochemical Calculations (1+1) credit-hours
Problems on concentrations, biochemical buffers and other types of solutions including acids and bases. General calculations used in spectrophotometric and radioactive measurements. Miscellaneous quantitations of some structural and functional aspects of macromolecules.

BCH 282:  Biochemistry of Nutrition (2+0) credit-hours
Body composition. Energy of food and its determination. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats of diets and their physiological effects. Energy balance. Water balance and sodium and potassium output. Minerals and trace elements in diets and their regulation to prevent epidemic diseases. Vitamins and their importance. Food poisoning.

BCH 350:  Plant Biochemistry (2+0) credit-hours
The plant cell wall, its biochemical composition and formation. Photosynthesis - Light phase, cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylation. Dark phase; C3 and C4 pathways. Respiration and oxidative phosphorylation. Biosynthesis of polysaccharides and chlorophyll. Nitrogen fixation, transport of nitrogenous compounds and their stage.
