Course Description: GE 201 Statics (Required for a BSCE degree)	An introduction to the techniques of the concrete production and its composition, properties and quality control. Analysis and design of simple and continuous beams. The design of one-way and two-way rigid slabs. Analysis and design of short axially loaded columns and spread footings. 2 (2,1, 0)
Prerequisite	ARCH 414 (Statics and Strength of Materials) and CE 265 (Structural Analysis). Prerequisite by Topics: Determination of bending and shear stresses in beams. Understanding the equilibrium conditions. Determining the shear and bending moment diagrams of determinate structures.
Course Learning Outcomes	Students completing this course successfully will be able to Describe the production methods and properties of structural concrete. Analyze and design RC simple and continuous beams. Analyze and design RC one-way and two-way slabs. Analyze and design RC short axially loaded columns. Analyze and design RC spread footings.
Topics Covered	Introduction (2 hrs) Properties of Concrete and Steel Bars (2 hrs) Analysis of Singly Reinforced Rectangular Beams (4 hrs) Design of Singly Reinforced Rectangular Beams (3 hrs) Shear in Beams (5 hrs) Continuous Beams and One way slabs (6 hrs) Design of Axially loaded Short Columns (2 hrs) Design of Spread RC Footings (4 hrs)
Class/ tutorial Schedule	Class is held three times per week in 50-minute lecture sessions. There is also a 50-minute weekly tutorial associated with this course.
Computer Applications	Excel and RC-Software Programs are encouraged to be used during the course.
Contribution of Course to Meeting the Professional Component	Students use latest codes for designing structural members and systems within appropriate constraints. Students recognize the role of professional societies in developing codes and standards and updating current knowledge.
