I have gained strong skills in statistics for health research including: planned collection, numeric and graphic summarization, and elementary statistical analysis of data. I have learned the standard techniques for parametric and non-parametric hypothesis testing; regression and correlation; contingency tables. Also randomization, blinding and other biomedical topics in statistics.
Analytical methods in epidemiological research including: basic epidemiological designs and the commonly used biostatistical techniques such as the Mantel-Haenszel, simple T-test, chi-squared, simple and multilinear regression, logistic regression, Poisson regression, and survival analysis such as Kaplan Meier and Cox-proportional hazard.
Methods for systematic reviews in health research including: designing a systematic review, protocol development, searching the published and unpublished medical literature, critical appraisal of clinical trials and application of the Cochrane risk of bias tools within systematic reviews. Also, I have learned the statistical techniques used for data synthesis in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
I took a master course on the scientific basis of epidemiological thinking which included topics on: the scientific method ideology, epistemology, qualitative research, complementary and integrative medicine, health communications, influence of the media, research ethics, and FiLCHeRS method of evidential reasoning.
Epidemiological methods: sources and uses of epidemiologic data for health services planning and administration including methods of data collection and study designs.
Applications of principles and methods of epidemiology to clinical problems. Evaluation and design of laboratory and clinical tests and of therapeutic interventions.
The design and analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials (RCTs) including: ethical considerations, intention-to-treat versus efficacy trials, principles of sampling and exclusion, methods of allocation and techniques of randomization, parallel versus cross over design, monitoring treatment outcomes, adverse effects, stopping rules, analytic techniques and data interpretation, and logistical issues in the management of clinical trials.
I have taken a master course on cancer control and epidemiology that included topics on: collection and analysis of epidemiological data on cancer; genetic, occupational, and other risk factors; analytic techniques; cancer control, prevention, screening, early detection, economic analysis and policy issues.
I have also developed skills on dealing with major quantitative research designs, measurement reliability and validity, data sources, internal and external validity, research proposals, and peer review.
Computer skills:
Stat computing using R program and its interface RStudio. My skills in R include: cleaning the data, handling objects matrices and data frames, using the R base functions and creating simple functions and loops, using base and online packages for R, analyzing the data, using commands to calculate many statistical calculations such as chi-squared, t-test etc, producing graphics and plots and saving the output in Git program.
Survival analysis: I have gained skills in performing survival analysis in R including performing Cox-Proportional hazard regression and producing Kaplan Meier (KM) curves. I also have experience in producing KM curves using SPSS software as well.
Meta-analysis programs:
Review Manger (RevMan): protocol development, performing and producing meta-analysis techniques and plots such as funnel plots, Forest plots, risk of bias tables etc.
OpenMeta[Analyst] program: calculation of odds ratio, relative risk etc.
GRADE: I am able to use different GRADE applications that help in developing guidelines and clinical recommendations. These include: GRADEpro, GRADE DECIDE, risk of bias tools, and summary of evidence tables etc.
Reference manager software: I am comfortable with using EndNote X7 for managing bibliographies, citations and references but I also have some past experience with using RefWorks software.
Hematology lab skills:
I am able to read and report bone marrow aspirates and biopsies and order the stains required for the specific diagnoses.
I have experience in reading flow cytometry for blood and lymph node specimens.
I am interested in teaching the skills required in reading blood smears to the junior medical staffs and students.
