Fawaz joined KSU in 2001 and Brunel as a full-time Ph.D. student in 2010 after completing an MSc degree in Sport and Recreation Management at the University of Sheffield. Prior to becoming a post-graduate student, Fawaz was a Lecturer at the College of Physical Education and Sport at the King Saud University in Saudi Arabia.
In 2005-2006, Fawaz was the founder of Saudi Ambassador Football Championship, Saudi Cultural Attaché Volleyball Championship, The Annual Cultural Meeting "Our Arab Culture and Other", The Annual Social Carnival for Saudis in the UK and Ireland, and Saudi International Conference as the first director of student activities in Saudi student clubs and school in the UK and Ireland. He is conducting research into the differing financial, planning, and management policies used by sports clubs in Saudi Arabia. in 2014 Dr FAWAZ KHIRY ALHAKAMI graduated from Brunel university under submitted thesis:
Strategy and Strategising “An examination of sport clubs privatisation strategy in Saudi Arabia”
Outside of his Ph.D. studies, Fawaz is an active member of the Arab Society at Brunel University and was elected Vice-President of Saudi Students Clubs in the UK and Ireland in 2011. The latter position follows his election as President of the London Saudi Students Club in 2010. Fawaz was also one of the founders of the Saudi International Conference and the Abstract Officer for the 5th Saudi International Conference held in 2011. Al-Hakami was appointed as Head of the Executive committee at 6th SIC2012 (Now known as SSC).
As a participant in the sport, Fawaz is a member of the Saudi Arabian Boy Scouts Association and Youth Welfare Activities Agency. In 2005, he was manager of the Saudi national tennis team which won the Bronze medal at that year Islamic games.
Al-Hakami has earned the distinction of representing Saudi Arabia on several local and international occasions within the youth and sports mission. Sport Sciences Ph.D. Student Fawaz Al-Hakami chose to represent his nation at The International Exhibition and Conference for Higher Education (IECHE 2013). His role in IECHE 2013 entailed sharing the experience of studying and living in the UK with delegates.

Fawaz has presented his research at conferences, the most recent being a paper entitled "The Role of Finance Managers in Football Clubs in Saudi Arabia" to Play the Game 2011 which was organized in cooperation with the German Sport University in Cologne. Also he presented papers at Conference of the European Association for Sport Management in Madrid 2011, Istanbul 2013. His contribution to the most famous international conferences in sports management field such as EASM, ICSEMIS and sport and society.
