Course description:
This course deals with the pharmacological actions, therapeutic uses, mechanism of action, adverse effects, contraindications and drug interaction of centrally acting drugs such as stimulants, sedative, hypnotics, anxiolytics, general anaesthetics, anti-epileptics, anti-emetics, anti-parkinsonians, anti-psychotics, opioid analgesics, anti-depressants, and anti-emetics.
It also covers the non-opioid analgesics, anti-pyretic, anti-inflammatory drugs, and others which are used for treatment of some skin diseases and diarrhea.The practical part of this course deals with some in-vivo experiments demonstrating the effects of the above mentioned drugs. It also includes some drug profiles to be presented by the students.

  • CNS stimulants: caffeine, strychnine, and picrotoxin.
  • CNS depressants: thiopental, Phenobarbital, chloralhydrate, and chlorpromazine.
  • Screening of anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Screening of local anesthetics.
  • Screening of analgesic drugs.
