Bio
Assem Barakat, born in Egypt in 1981, earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry from Alexandria University in 2002. He commenced his career as a Chemist at Pharco Pharmaceutical Company before transitioning to the Chemistry Department at the College of Science, Alexandria University, through a government program for top-ranked students. In 2006, he received a one-year fellowship as a young researcher at the University of Genoa, Italy.

In 2007, Barakat was awarded a Ph.D. Scholarship program from Politecnico di Milano, Italy, in collaboration with ETH Zurich, Switzerland, and the University of Stuttgart, Germany, completing his degree in 2010. He joined Pharos University in Alexandria as a Lecturer of Organic Chemistry in 2010, subsequently moving to King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as an Assistant Professor in 2011. He was later promoted to Associate Professor in 2017 and achieved the rank of full Professor in February 2021.

Barakat has received several awards, including the Arab Chemistry Award in 2016 (Saudi Chemical Society Scientific Excellence Award for the Youth Section) and the IAAM Scientist Award in 2020 in Ulrika, Sweden. His research interests encompass drug discovery, protein-protein interaction inhibitors (p53-MDM2), asymmetric synthesis, and X-ray single crystallography. He has authored over 300 articles and holds three patents. Additionally, he has supervised 13 Master's and four Ph.D. students to date.

  • Design and synthesis of new entities as potential pharmaceuticals targets including (MDM2-p53 inhibitor; Phosphodiesterase 1; phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K); HER2; Anti-Diabetics agents; COX-1 Inhibitor with TNF-α, and IL-6 inhibitory activity). COVID-19.
  • Development of new green synthetic methodologies for desired target molecule.
  • Development and synthesis of chiral reagents, metal catalysts in asymmetric synthesis to synthesize novel bioactive compounds.

Experimental and Technical Skills:

  • Development of some new synthetic methodologies.
  • Synthetic experience to work from milligram to gram scale
  • Expertise in column purification over silica and neutral alumina
  • Expertise in analysing spectroscopic data like FT-IR, (1H, 13C, 31P, 19F) NMR and Mass.
