Job description

I am presently serving as Professor in Department of Botany & Microbiology, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where I am teaching Molecular Biology and Bionanotechnology since 2010. My research program encompasses next generation sequencing, computational chemistry, bioprospecting and bionanotechnology, and have authored/co-authored eight books and over 263 articles in more than 76 journals of international repute. I have co-supervised 6 PhD students and one Master degree student at my current affiliation. Lecture to post graduate and PhD classes, supervising master and PhD students, writing research proposal for funding, serving as investigator, research papers and book publication, administrative assignment are he core job serving at present affiliation.

Faculty Perspective

I have developed a great admiration for the concept of experiential learning as I strongly believe that a hands-on approach is the best tool of learning. This approach is applicable both in the classroom as well as the laboratory setup, and therefore justifies my passion for research and teaching. My long-term goal is to develop an excellent research program at KSU.

    Statement of teaching philosophy:

There is wide variation in learning styles among individuals, there can be no single correct teaching approach. Successful teaching requires the participation and cooperation of both teacher and student. True teaching techniques should enable students to learn a body of knowledge with the aim of understanding and thinking about it critically and creatively.
My teaching philosophy refers to prepare a crop of students with sound scientific knowledge and at the same time they be responsible citizens also. For that, interpretive programs will have to be developed for students. Interpretive programs translate information from scientific language to “everybody language”. So, students can easily understand it. The interpretive style is interactive and relaxed with a focus on imparting an understanding of meanings and relationships rather than on memorizing facts.
To interpret the topic/ issues formal, non-formal teaching approaches may be used. Formal teaching follows fixed procedures and under this a required curriculum for a particular grade level will be covered. In the non-formal teaching, however, something is taught is just as important as what is taught. It will focus on problem solving and will maintain a flexible approach based on learner needs. Informal teaching applies to acquaint students to situations in life that come about spontaneously often within the family, around the neighborhood etc. The informal teaching will aim to develop scientific ethics among students.
All three teaching approaches are important and can complement one another, and make students more competent professionally as well as responsible citizen of any country.
