Dr. Mohammad Ajmal Ali, PhD, FEHT (born 23 July 1977), is currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Botany and Microbiology at King Saud University, where he has been teaching Plant systematics, Molecular Biology and Bionanotechnology since 2010. Originally from India, Dr. Ali obtained his M.S. degree in Botany in 1999, securing the third position in the university, followed by a PhD in 2006 under the supervision of Professor Arun K. Pandey at Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University. Dr. Ali completed his postdoctoral research at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Daejeon, South Korea. His research interests encompass next-generation sequencing, computational chemistry, bioprospecting, molecular biology, and bionanotechnology. He has authored and co-authored more than 10 books and over 324 research articles published in more than 84 internationally reputed journals, including Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Life Science, Current Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Electroanalysis, Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences, Journal of King Saud University – Science, RSC Advances, Electrochimica Acta, International Journal of Molecular Sciences, Biomolecules, Plants, Microchemical Journal, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, and Microchimica Acta. Dr. Ali served as Guest Editor for the special issue entitled “Advances in Understanding of SARS-CoV-2 Three Years Since the Outbreak of COVID-19” in the journal MDPI Molecules. In 2026, he achieved 5282 citations with an h-index of 40 according to Web of Science, and a ResearchGate h-index: 44, citation 6,732. With over 16 years of teaching and 24 years of research experience spanning from TMBU to KSU, Dr. Ali has supervised 7 PhD students, organized five scientific workshops, and served as Principal Investigator for major research projects funded by RG-DSR-KSU and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). Dr. Ali is an elected Fellow of the East Himalayan Society for Spermatophyte Taxonomy (EHSST) and holds life memberships in several scientific societies, including the International Society of Plant Morphologists, the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy, the East Himalayan Society for Spermatophyte Taxonomy, and the Indian Botanical Society. He is also a verified peer reviewer on Publons and has reviewed manuscripts for more than 44 reputed journals. In addition, he has served as Assistant Editor for Genetics and Molecular Research, Pleione, and the Egyptian Journal of Horticulture. Dr. Ali has visited several academic institutions as a visiting scholar, including North-Eastern Hill University, University of North Bengal, and ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region. His academic achievements include receiving the Distinguished Paper Award from the Association of Chemical Sensors in Taiwan, serving as Chief Speaker at the KRIBBian International Researcher Day at KRIBB in 2009, delivering a keynote lecture at the International Conference on Environmental Protection and Bionanotechnology at National Taipei University of Technology in 2019, and participating as an international resource person in a workshop at University of Delhi in 2009. Currently, Dr. Ali is serving as the President of the Novel Aspirational Trust since 2022. He has also delivered invited lectures at St. Joseph College, Darjeeling; KKM College, Pakur; and the National Botanical Research Institute. Dr. Ali has been listed among the World’s Top 2% Scientists for 2023, 2024, and 2025 in the database compiled and updated by Stanford University.
