Students' Responsibilities                                                                                                                                                                                           (1) Study each lesson thoroughly after it has been given in class. You should not try to cram all the information one day before the exam as this will result, more than likely, in poor performance.                                                                                                                               (2) You are responsible for checking this site at least once a week, and whenever you are asked to in class.                                               (3) You MUST sign-up in the nicenet.org website [see directions below].

Nicenet.org                                                                                                                                                                                                                       In order to facilitate better communication between all of us, please try to keep yourself updated by regularly checking out our Speaking (2) Internet Classroom Assistant at: www.nicenet.org The Class Key is: ____________ This website allows me to send all of you messages that are sent right to your e-mails. It also allows you to send personal messages to my e-mail. Please don't hesitate to ask any question(s) and I'll try to reply as soon as possible.

Attendance & Medical Excuses                                                                                                                                                                                   (1) Regular attendance is a MUST!!! Your personal or medical excuses will not be taken into consideration when presenting the warnings. Medical excuses will be investigated by Mrs. Jawaher Al-Ghanaam when presenting the banning lists. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you NEVER exceed the 50% absence limit! (2) If you have a medical excuse for being absent, photocopy it, write your name and class group clearly on it, and put it in the "Medical Excuses" file on my desk, in my office. Don't give it to me in class. These official excuses will be verified later by Mrs. Al-Jawaher at the end of this semester. (3) Attendance will usually be taken 10 minutes after class starts. If you arrive later, come in and attend the rest of the lecture. Being late 3 times will equal to being absent one time.

Being absent for an exam...                                                                                                                                                                                          Do not be absent for the in-term exams because there will be absolutely no make up exams. If you have an extreme medical reason for being absent, you will need to present official verification of your medical situation, and then each individual case will be dealt with accordingly. The make-up exam (for those who miss the 1st or 2nd in-term exams) will only be held once on ___________________________. This date is final and cannot be changed. You must bring a copy of your medical excuse with you on the day of the exam even if I have already seen it. If you also miss the make-up exam, you will get a “zero” and not be given another chance to take the make-up exam.

Public Speaking Skills

You may be asking yourself, "What does a good speech look like?" In the following section, you will be able to select video clips presented by a student in the Department of Speech Communication to illustrate effective and ineffective public speaking skills.

The first speech presented is an informative speech. For your viewing, the speech is divided into three sections: the introduction, body, and conclusion of the speech. Following each section, click below the video to view comments about the speech.

Informative Speech

Video: Introduction

The content of a speech is important. However, without an effective delivery a speech loses its meaning. The following clip will demonstrate what not to do when giving a speech. A delivery of this quality would be less than acceptable.

Persuasive Speech

The other speech students are required to give in SPC 105 is a persuasive speech. Once again, you will be able to view video clips illustrating a few of the steps included in Monroe's Motivated Sequence for persuasive speaking presented by a student in the Speech Communication Department. Be sure to click on the comments below each speech to gain a better understanding of how persuasive speeches are evaluated.

Video: Attention Step

Perhaps one the most difficult skills students must master is using a visual aid properly. In the previous clip showing the "Satisfaction" step of a persuasive speech, the speaker effectively uses the visual aid to add to the speech. Now, check out the following clip that shows what happens when visual aids are not used properly in a speech.
