The Use of Ultrasound and Radiologic Imaging in the Diagnosis of Male Infertility

Binsaleh, Saleh . 2009

A male factor can be attributed to almost 50% of all causes of infertility. Hypofertile men are being increasingly investigated in an effort to find a treatable cause or to rule out more serious underlying conditions such as cancer

Common causes of male infertility include varicocele, obstruction due to epididymal blockage, vasal or seminal vesicles agenesis, and ejaculatory duct obstruction. Other conditions may be identified during infertility workup such as cryptorchidism, testicular tumors, testicular microlithiasis, pituitary adenoma, and renal disorders

Imaging studies such as ultrasound scan (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), angiography, nuclear scans, and thermographs are used in the work up of infertile men. With the refinement and the introduction of newer imaging modalities, reliable adjuncts to clinical examination can be obtained to facilitate or to confirm a suspected cause in male infertility. In this chapter, various imaging modalities in the work up of male infertility will be summarized with emphasis on indication and outcome interpretation
