Description:

Dental Health is the science and art of promoting oral health and preventing oral disease in a community setting. Through this course students acquire knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviors necessary to promote dental health and prevent disease through organized community based programs. Students are introduced to basic principles of research
methodology and biostatistics, epidemiological indices, population needs, and community health planning methods for dental education of the public.

3.Student Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of this course the student will demonstrate an understanding of the oral health care
delivery system, understand basic statistics and indices, and create,implement and evaluate a community based plan.
The aim of this course is to prepare the student to promote oral health and prevent oral disease in the community

and look beyond the private practice clinical setting.

Intellectual Skills: Written and Oral Communication , Logic, Reasoning and Critical thinking ,
Examination of Values ,Application of Scientific Method and Principles .

•Describe the role of the dental hygienist in prevention and control of oral conditions and health in the

•Describe the dental hygienists responsibilities in health care promotion in the U.S.

The instructor evaluates the students over the course of the semester by written examinations, projects, class participation, self study assignments and an oral presentation. Students must achi eve a grade of 75 or better in order to pass this course.

WEEK 1; Course Overview History of public health, utilization of dental services.

WEEK 2; Introduction to dental epidemiology.

WEEK 3; Indices used for assessing distribution of disease, determinants of Disease.

WEEK 4; Research in community dentistry and biostatistics.

WEEK 5; First Midterm Exam.

WEEK 6; Public health measures for prevention and control of dental caries and periodontal disease.

WEEK 7; Research in community dentistry and biostatistics.

WEEK 8; Defining the needs of a target population.

WEEK 9; Program planning and community health education, principles of teaching & learning.

WEEK10; Second Midterm Exam.

WEEK11; Dentistry for special needs, seniors, physically handicapped and mentally retarded populations.
WEEK 12; Public health issues of today, smokeless tobacco, infectious hazards, mercury safety.

WEEK 13; Dental practice structure, financing of dental care.

WEEK 14; FINAL EXAMINATION.
