ENG 544: Postcolonial Theory & Criticism

This course provides an advanced introduction to postcolonial literary and cultural theory, focusing on its development within Anglo-American literary studies and key contemporary debates. Students are introduced to central concepts such as colonialism, nationalism, decolonization, and globalization, alongside major critical approaches including historicist analysis, colonial discourse analysis, and ideology critique.

Through a combination of theoretical readings and close study of novels from Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, the course examines postcolonial literature in both global and localized contexts. Emphasis is placed on comparative perspectives, critical self-reflection, and the application of postcolonial concepts to literary and cultural analysis across disciplines.
