RDS 510

Pulp Biology

2

This course covers the biologic basis of pulp therapy based on classic and current scientific literature, embryology, physiology, and microanatomy of the dental pulp and related structures.  The course also explores prevention, etiology, diagnosis and treatment using scientific principles.  Students are taught biologic rationale for treatment from extensive literature review.

RDS 511

Endodontic Specialty Clinic

4

The clinical course is offered during the first academic year. The graduate students perform diagnosis, management and treatment of patients requiring endodontic therapy, under supervision of endodontic faculty.

RDS 512

Endodontic Seminar

2

This is a weekly seminar designed to thoroughly expose the first year graduate students to the well known endodontic textbooks.

RDS 514*

Case Presentation

2

A weekly seminar designed for diagnosis and treatment planning for complicated endodontic cases.  The students and faculty also present cases in a prescribed format.  The first year graduate students discuss and defend treatment planning for selected clinical cases and in the process get exposed to critical analysis of fellow students, faculty and guest clinicians.

RDS 515, 525

Current Endodontic Literature Review

4

The two courses focus on detailed review of recently published literature on all subjects related to endodontics.  They are designed to enable students to critically review articles for scientific merit and clinical relevancy.

RDS 516

Pre-Clinical Endodontics and Orientation

1

The course is directed towards assessment, development, and enhancement of clinical skills in endodontic therapy.  The students perform a specific series of complex procedures under simulated clinical conditions.  The students also receive orientation regarding clinical protocol.  The course has a laboratory / lecture format.

RDS 517*

Advanced Endodontic Specialty Clinic

3

The clinical course is offered during the first summer session of the program, under faculty supervision. In this course, students are challenged with endodontic cases of increasing difficulty.

RDS 521

Endodontic Specialty Clinic

4

The second year graduate students, under faculty supervision, perform diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with advanced endodontic problems.  Endodontic cases of increasing difficulty are presented to student e.g. medically compromised patients, complex treatment and retreatment cases, and cases requiring peri-radicular or corrective surgical intervention.

RDS 522

Endodontic Seminar

2

The students engage in depth exploration of subjects of individual interest under graduate faculty supervision.  The purpose of this seminar is to enable the graduate students to perform detailed analysis of published literature in an area of interest for the development of protocol and thesis formulation.

RDS 524*

Case Presentation

2

This course is a continuation of RDS 514.  The second year graduate students are challenged with diagnosis and treatment planning decisions for complicated endodontic cases requiring advanced skills.  Based on documented scientific evidence and second year students defend their diagnosis and treatment planning.

RDS 526

Multidisciplinary Seminar

1

The multidisciplinary seminar offered during the second academic year will be concerned with the endodontic consideration of restorative dentistry, periodontics and other related dental specialties.  The course is designed to help students appreciate the interrelationship of endodontics with other dental specialties.  At the completion of this course the student will be able to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for any patient requiring endodontic therapy and consult and coordinate endodontic treatment with specialists in other dental disciplines.

RDS 527*

Advanced Endodontic Specialty Clinic

3

The course is offered during the second summer session.  Under faculty supervision, the students enhance their skills in the diagnosis and treatment of complicated endodontic cases.

RDS 531*

Advanced Endodontic Specialty Clinic

2

The course is a continuation of clinical endodontic courses.  The third year endodontic graduate students mainly deal with complex treatment and retreatment cases, difficult interdisciplinary cases, complicated emergency cases, and cases requiring surgical endodontics.

RDS 532

Prognostic Endodontics

2

The seminar is offered during the final year in the program.  Students present their cases with appropriate recall examination findings.  The main purpose of the course is to help students appreciate the results of treatment rendered in the past and the probable future course of the case.
