Course Content

PSL 131

Medical Physiology for Medical Students

This course is designed to provide medical students the basic knowledge and the important features of human physiology in a clear and concise manner. Its main aim is to present essential facts and concepts of medical physiology, which will aid in the understanding of clinical medicine. The following systems are taught throughout this course: Introduction to physiology, body fluids, muscle and nerve, blood, autonomic nervous system, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system, respiratory system, renal system, acid-base balance, endocrine system, and reproductive system. This course was planned to be taught in complete one academic year.

Introduction to Physiology:

Cell biology, body fluids and the mechanisms of transport across

    the cell membrane.

Autonomic Nervous System:

Anatomical organization and the effects of sympathetic and

    parasympathetic stimulation on different systems.

Cardiovascular System:

Heart as a pump (anatomy and physiology of the heart): Properties

of cardiac muscle, cardiac cycle, heart sounds, ECG, cardiac output.

vascular system haemodynamics: Blood pressure, regional

circulation and pathophysiology of few abnormal states e.g.

    hypotension, shock and cardiac failure.

Endocrine system:

Glands like pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreas.

Hormonal actions, regulation of secretion and disorder of function

    of each gland.

Reproductive System:

Sex determination and differentiation, menstrual cycle, pregnancy

and the action of hormones in both the sexes.
