Vocabulary 2 (Level 2)

Credit hrs: 2

Prerequisites: Vocabulary 1.

Brief Descriptions: The course aims at developing the students' vocabulary knowledge.

Marks: 100 (50 for semester work + 50% for final exam)

Semester work:  25% interms + 25% interm.

Textbook:  McCarthy, Michael & O’Dell, Felicity  (2007). English Vocabulary in Use. Upper-intermediate.  Second Edition. Cambridge University Press.

Vocabulary range: 1200 words (40 words per lesson x 30 lessons)

 

Audiovisuals:

o   Course has a CD.

o   Would like to use a smart board and/or a class with an LCD projector, and wireless internet connection.

 

Lesson to be Covered:

Total vocabulary teaching hours per semester = 14 weeks x 2 hours = 28 hours

The vocabulary course will highlight the following:

·       Pronunciation: silent letter, hidden consonants, double letters, spelling changes, words with the same vowel but different pronunciation and words with different vowels but same pronunciation, syllabication and stress.

·       Words commonly mispronounced

·       Homonyms and homophones

·       Spelling changes and spelling variants.

·       Part of speech, count/non-count, abstract/concrete, collective nouns, singular & plural forms, Words that only occur in the plural

·       Word synonyms and antonyms

·       English and Arabic meanings

·       Word formation: prefixes, suffixes, roots, derivatives, Word families and compounds

·       Idioms describing people, feelings or mood; Idioms connected with praise and criticism; Idioms connected with using language; Miscellaneous Idioms

·       Expressions with do and make, bring and take, get, set and put, come and go

·       Acronyms and abbreviations

·       New words in English

·       American vs British usage

·       Formal and informal words 1

·       U.S. English

·       Similes

·       Binomials

·       Linguistic features of Headlines, signs and notices

·       English and Arabic meanings of single words, phrases, idioms, collocations.

·       Using words, idioms, phrases in sentences.

Vocabulary Teaching Technique

  • Book design and chapter design are explained.
  • One or two lesson can be covered per class session. A total of 3-6 lessons can be covered per week.
  • I go through Each Lesson Section By Section Reading And Explaining And Giving Extra Examples And Extra Information About Pronunciation: Silent Letter, Hidden Consonants, Double Letters, Spelling Changes, Words With The Same Vowel But Different Pronunciation And Words With Different Vowels But Same Pronunciation, Syllabication And Stress; Spelling Changes And Spelling Variants; Part Of Speech, Count/Non-Count, Singular & Plural Forms; American Vs British Usage; Word Synonyms And Antonyms; English And Arabic Meanings; Word Formation; Idioms And Collocations; Word Families

Vocabulary Tests:

Each test will consist of several questions that will test the students knowledge of the following:

  • Recognizing  silent letter,
  • Recognizing hidden consonants,
  • Recognizing double letters,
  • Recognizing words with the same vowel but different pronunciation and words with different vowels but same pronunciation, syllabication and stress.
  • Identifying the part of speech,
  • Noun types: count/non-count, collective, abstract… etc
  • Recognizing  singular & plural forms
  • American vs British usage
  • Word synonyms and antonyms
  • English and Arabic meanings
  • Making words from  prefixes, suffixes, roots
  • Breaking words into their components:
  • Recognizing derivatives and compounds
  • Understanding and using Idioms and collocations
  • Giving the English definition
  • Giving the Arabic meaning of some words.
  • Using words, idioms, binomials, similes in sentences
  • The words covered on each in-term should consist of a random sample of 75-100 words.

Vocabulary Study skills:
  • Vocabulary textbook design and lesson format.
  • Using the dictionary
  • Divide notebook into sections: words with silent letters, words with double letters, words hidden sounds, words with 2 spellings, word derivatives, word synonyms, word antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, compounds, American and British variants …etc.
  • Preparing vocabulary cards.
  • How to practice, review, concept maps, word families.
  • Mnemonic devices
  • Building a daily, weekly and monthly study schedule.

Extensive Reading & Listening:

  • Each student will bring a story/book of her choice to class. An extra reading hour is given in the garden, where the students and I bring stories, magazines and other books. We discuss and each student gives a 5-minute summary of her book.
  • Students are asked to read a story for half an hour a day.
  • Students are asked to watch T.V. news (BBC or CNN for 15-30 minutes a day.

Vocabulary Online Course:

  • An online course will be used. It will provide students with extra practice. Vocabulary quizzes and exercises will be added weekly.  The students will locate words, texts and respond to questions in the discussion forum.
