مقرر 333 عمر - تشيد مباني -1

Introduction to various building systems and primary building elements. Classification and description of building systems. Detailed study of skeletal, framed structures, roofs, floors, space structures, foundations and working joints. Detailed study of vertical circulation elements: stairs and ramps. Practical exercises in building construction and preparation of drawings and field study reports.

SYLLABUS

Course Brief:

In this course the students are introduced to the primary structure systems of buildings: their concepts, functions, types and methods of design, detailing and construction.

The course also elaborates on the elements and functions like the vertical circulation and joints which affect both the design and nature of the interior space and composition of the primary elements.

Super Structure:

Including the relation with the sub-structure, systems: Solid, skeletal and surface structure, choice, materials. The vertical elements: Column, their design, materials. The horizontal elements: Floors and roof systems, their spans, choice, materials. The structure and environmental aspects.

Vertical Circulation:

Mechanical and non-mechanical. Emphasis on the non-mechanical: ramps, stairs, ladders, their types, materials, calculation, design and detailing. Bullstrade and handrails: design, details of fixing.

Sub-Structure:

This contains the study of foundations of the building, the basement, soil: Types, functional requirements, loading, choice and design and detailing.

Joints:

Definitions, types: Construction, thermal and moisture joints, settlement joints, design, detailing, protection and cover.

Exercises:

Following the above, step program and the instructions gives during the lecture-hours; the students are expected to acquire the basic techniques of solving the construction problems of the primary elements of building. Relevant exercises to each stage in the course are given. The exercises will cover preparations of architecture drawing, technical report, field work studies and/or models.  The following exercises are suggested for the course:

1-     1- A technical report about a type of foundation of building in Riyadh area, discussing is choice, type, loading and relation with the super-structure.

2-     2- Study of a number of super structure systems. With regard to their grid, spans, vertical and horizontal elements design, materials.

3-     3- Design of stairs in different situation, solving structure and support problem, producing relevant details.

4-     4- Solution of joints problems, both the expansion and settlement: location, design and detailing.

Note: Drawing

1-     1- Plans and sections showing the vertical and horizontal elements of construction.

2-     2- Typical details at the point of intersection, joint, drop of level change in direction showing materials and method of fixing.

3-    3- Indicate materials used in the construction of each element adopting the appropriate techniques.

4-     4- Relevant dimensions, levels and specifications.

Grading Criteria:

Final grade of each student will be determined according to the following criteria:

Rate of attendance 10 %

Participation 5 %

Mid-Exam 20 %

Practical Exercises 25 %

Final-Examination 40 %

Note: student whose absentees from the course (lectures and exercises), exceed 25% will not be allowed to sit for the final examinations
