Nur 202 – Emergency Nursing
Course Description:
This course focuses on the development of knowledge, techniques, and skills needed for the delivery of nursing care to clients experiencing health problems requiring immediate medical intervention.
Major Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course:
1. The student will acquire knowledge about the design and function of the hospital Emergency Department.
2. The student will acquire knowledge about nursing assessment skills utilized in assessing clients experiencing health problems requiring immediate medical intervention.
3. The student will acquire knowledge of complex nursing therapies associated with the care of clients experiencing health problems requiring immediate medical intervention.
4. The student will acquire an understanding of legal considerations when delivering care to clients experiencing health problems requiring immediate medical intervention.
Course Objectives:
1. The student will acquire knowledge about nursing assessment skills utilized in assessing clients experiencing health problems requiring immediate medical intervention by:
a. defining selected terms.
b. identifying assessment guidelines pertinent to each of the body systems.
c. prioritizing assessment guidelines when dealing with clients manifesting problems of multiple body systems.
2. The student will acquire knowledge of complex nursing therapies associated with the care of clients experiencing health problems requiring immediate medical intervention by:
a. defining selected terms.
b. stating the etiology and usual manifestations of selected health problems.
c. discussing common modalities for delivering complex nursing care to clients with selected health problems.
d. identifying nursing care responsibilities for clients experiencing selected health problems.
3. The student will acquire an understanding of legal considerations when delivering care to clients experiencing health problems requiring immediate medical interventions by:
a. defining selected terms.
b. discussing procedures for the documentation of nursing care provided within the Emergency Department.
c. stating the importance of using available, well-maintained equipment and well-trained staff in the Emergency Department.
d. identifying protocols the Emergency Department utilized in dealing with: obtaining consent forms, Dead on Arrival (DOAs), Discharges, Against Medical Advice (AMA), procedures transferring clients to another facility, telephone orders and confidentiality.
Number of Hours Per Week:
10 semester hours: 1 lecture & 9 lab per week

Lab: Saturdays , Mondays , and Wednesdays 3:00 – 5:00 pm
Sundays 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Course Information and Policies
1. Students are responsible for all special requirements and information presented in the course syllabus.
2. Academic Progress: Students are responsible for contacting faculty members for consultation regarding a problem with, or questions about the course. Any student who earns a grade of 50% or less on any test or assignment is advised to contact the course instructor to discuss their academic progress.
3. Attendance: The Nursing adheres to the following attendance policy: Attendance in class is mandatory. The faculty understands however, that at times students become ill or have personal or family emergencies that preclude them from attending class. If a student misses more than 25%, he May fail the course and receive a course grade of F. Students will be asked to sign an attendance sheet daily to document their presence in class. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure they sign this attendance record. If a student is absent with acceptable excuse, he/she is responsible for obtaining information/notes/handouts from another student. If a student is absent on a test day, this counts as 1 absence.
4. Testing Policy and Procedure
a. Testing Policy
- Students will be expected to place all books and papers away (outside the test-room) while they are taking the test.
- Students should place their students’ ID on the computer table during the exam.
- Any question regarding students’ sharing of test information, talking during the test or any other indication of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. (Refer to College/Student Handbook).
- Exam format for the course will be MCQ exam.
-PRINTING or COPYING OF ANY EXAM OR PARTS OF AN EXAM IS CONSIDERED ACADEMIC DISHONESTY. INSTANCES OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY WILL BE TREATED ACCORDING TO THE COLLEGE POLICY.
b. Student Missing an Exam:
If a student is unable to take a test due to acceptable excuse, that student must inform the course instructor. You must negotiate with instructor to make up the test within one week. Students that miss a scheduled test may be asked to take an alternate test.
5. Assignments/Quizzes: Various assignments may be given to enhance student learning and interaction with the content. Points will be deducted for late assignments. Graded assignments turned in after the due time noted will be lowered 10%. An additional 10% grade level will be lost for each successive day late. Random, unannounced quizzes may be given during the semester. Unannounced quizzes missed due to absence cannot be made up.
6. Announcements: You are responsible for any announcements posted by any member of the faculty. Additional notices and messages are posted on appropriate bulletin boards in the College hallways. Students are responsible for messages announced in class and the bulletin boards. PLEASE CHECK THESE BULLETIN BOARDS ON A REGULAR BASIS.
Grading System
**THE STUDENT SHALL MAINTAIN AN AVERAGE GRADE OF AT LEAST “D.”
A- Classroom: Grades in the classroom activities shall be based on performance according to the following methods:
- Unit exams/ Quizzes
- Final comprehensive examination (counts 1/3 of final course grade)
- Other written assignments
B-Clinical: Grades in the clinical activities will be demonstrated through:
Evaluation based on the specific objectives related to content of this Medical-Surgical Practicum. Observation will be made of the student’s ability to utilize knowledge learned during earlier and present learning experiences, and growth in the ability to demonstrate nursing psychomotor skills.
**Nursing lab performance must be satisfactory, all assigned work must be completed and turned in, and the clinical competency must be passed before a final grade will be assigned.
