Purpose of the test

The purpose of the test is to make inferences about language ability which will be used as part of the information a travel agency in Saudi Arabia will take into consideration in making hiring decisions. The description of the job requirements of a tour operator/ guide is as follows:

·        Office work in operating and arranging tours: This includes sending and receiving memos and letters, making reservations, and arranging tours.

·        Field work with the tour groups: This includes taking the groups to sites, describing the scenery, interpreting, and caring to the tourists’ needs.

There are three levels of hiring decisions: to hire without training, to hire with training, or not to hire. The test will cover all language skills in general, and will emphasize on the oral abilities in particular. The results must specify the ability of the test takers to comprehend and produce English language in different tourism related contexts, with a special focus on oral abilities, tourism and Islamic terminology, and knowledge of forms of register.
