Course Description
This course offers an introduction to the process elements and skills of nursing management.
Emphasis is placed upon administrative process conducted within the nursing department. The
organizational structures, management of human and physical resources, as well as management of
work environment are examined as they related to the role of the first line nurse manager at the
patient care division.
Field experiences are designed to offer the students the opportunity to integrate management
principles, practices, and skills through observing, discussing, and participating in selected aspects
of the management process on a patient care division
Course goal:
At the end of this course the student should be able to apply the principles of administration in various
care settings. Emphasis is placed on the development of leadership skills in the management of patient
care and nursing services.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the students will be able to:
1. Identify the basic managerial skills and understanding how they can be developed.
2. Develop the critical thinking to become a more creative problem solver.
3. Appreciate the value of group decision making.
4. Differentiate between different organizational structure.
5. Apply the appropriate patient care delivery system
6. Identify the different aspects of human resources planning (staffing).
7. Communicate effectively with organizational members to promote good interpersonal
relationships.
8. Identify the importance of applying recoding and reporting principles.
9. Correlate the application of appropriate leadership style on worker motivation
10. Describe the link between performance appraisal and quality of care.
