Reading  104

  Motivation
He who has a garden and a library wants for nothing.
                                                                               Cicero
(106 - 43 BC)

Textbook: Boeckner, K. & Brown, P.C. (1996). Oxford English for computing. Oxford: Oxford University Press.

 About 104 Reading
The reading course aims at developing students’ reading comprehension skills, understanding the main ideas of the reading passage, analyzing the details of the reading passage, using contextual references, guessing the meaning of difficult words from the context, using technical and non –technical dictionaries to create personal word study and vocabulary archives. Students will synthesize each reading passage to understand explicit and implicit details. Students will use the information of the reading passage to complete the tasks assigned to each unit. These tasks include comprehension questions and activities on language skills. The learning activities link reading skills to listening and writing. Functional grammar is used to expand students’ understanding of the contextual details.

Organization

All units contain two reading passages. The first reading passage is general in nature. The second reading passage is usually more specific or technical and can be used for individual study. The activities which accompany the passages are designed to improve both extensive reading skills (reading speed, mechanical reading, less attention to details), and intensive reading skills (reading comprehension, main ideas, contextual clues, more attention to details). Texts are adopted from textbooks, newspapers, popular computing magazines, Internet Newsgroup, screen displays, web pages, and manuals.

Expected Learning Outcomes:

Students will

v     Understand a wide variety of text including diagrams, tables, and advertisements.

v     Compare and contrast different sources of information, written and spoken.

v     Enhance contextual analysis.
