Introduction to Dentistry
First Semester

Credit : 1 hour (Lecture)
Course Description:
The first part of this course is designed to provide the 1st year dental student with an introduction to dentistry by over viewing the concepts, principles and procedures of various specialties in dentistry. The second part of the course will address the behavioral aspects in dentistry, and particular emphasis will be placed on understanding human behavior, patient management and the ethical responsibility inherent within the scope of the dental profession.
Course Assessment:
The final grade of the course will be based on four written exams, two given at the 1st semester and another two given at the 2nd semester. Also, several quiz will be given randomly through the course without previous notification during the first 5 minutes of any lecture session, so be prepared! The percentage of the grade is as follows:
Quizzes - 10%
First exam - 10%
Second exam - 30%
Third exam - 10%
Final exam - 40%
To obtain a passing grade the student need to have a final cumulative score of 60% of all written exams.
Attendance:
Please be reminded absentees will be recorded for all students whom their names appears on the class list. If any student is absent for more than 25% of the total lectures, he/she will not be permitted to sit for the final examination. Students who came 10 minutes late for the lecture their attendance will not be taken for that lecture.

Introduction to Dentistry
First Semester
Course Description:
Provide first year dental students with an introduction to concepts, principles and procedures of various disciplines in dentistry with emphasis on prevention, comprehensive treatment and patient management. Dental curriculum orientation and regulations in pre-clinic and clinic area will be provided.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the course, the student should:
- define various discipline in dentistry and describe objectives of each discipline.
- be familiar with characteristics of target population served by the discipline.
- discuss preventive aspects of each discipline in dentistry.
- explain the role of health provider in patient management related to the discipline.
- discuss major procedures in the discipline with emphasis on comprehensive treatment.
- have sufficient knowledge on professionalism and professional ethics.
Course Organization:
Class activities will be in the form of lectures and discussions. Since the course is an introduction to each of the disciplines of dentistry, a representative from each division of the Dental School will conduct a lecture and discussion related to that discipline.
C. Readings:
Library readings such as introductory chapter from discipline textbook or handouts will be assigned for each lecture by discipline representative.
D. Course Assessment:
Quizzes - 5%
First examination - 10%
Second examination - 30%
The course meets Saturday at 1:00 2- 2:00 p.m. in DUC Room 02/GA and Tuesday at 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. in MUC Room 101.

Behavioral Dentistry
Second Semester
Course Description:
Behavioral dentistry has been defined as the interdisciplinary field concerned with the development and integration of behavioral an biodental science knowledge and techniques relevant to oral health and disease, and the application of this knowledge and these techniques to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
The objective of this course is to examine the key parameters in the science of behavior and to show how and why this science is critical to the successful practice of dentistry. A competent practitioner can be a better professional by augmenting clinical and technical skills with the application of behavioral scientific principles.
Course Objectives:
Upon completing the course, the student should:
1. Understand how behavioral concepts can be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of dental patient.
2. Know the role of behavior in the dynamics of the doctor to patient relationship.
3. Understand basic interpersonal communication skills and be able to handle special problems in communication.
4. Use the techniques of behavior modification to promote patient compliance with oral therapeutic measures.
5. Know the behavioral view of the provider.
6. Understand the fundamentals of problem solving and conflict resolution.
7. Learn techniques of managing the fearful and apprehensive patient.
Course Organization:
The course is to be developed through lectures and classroom discussion. It is strongly recommend that you read the assigned reading before the lectures to facilitate useful and productive classroom discussion. Hypothetical situations will be created where role playing can be experimented with for greater understanding of concepts.

Required Reading: A course notebook including the chapters involved in the course is available at the Copy Center in MUC and DUC.
NOTE : Students are strongly advised to purchase the required notebook for the course.
