On the cover of Cemistry and Biology, Volume 22, Issue 6, 18 June 2015: In Greek mythology, Chimera, shown on the cover, was a fire-breathing hybrid creature composed of several animals, usually a lion with the head of a goat on its back and the head of a snake at the tip of its tail. Protein scientists co-opted the name to denote any engineered protein constructed by combining sequences from multiple naturally occurring proteins. In this issue, Abuelizz and Mahmud (pp. 724–733) studied chimeras to decipher the molecular mechanism of pseudoglycosyltransferase enzyme. These insights will facilitate production of carbohydrate mimetics, redesigned glycoconjugates, and novel bioactive natural products.
