PERIODONTAL MICROBIOLOGY
COURSE CONTENTS OBJECTIVES AND EVALUATION

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This lecture/seminar course is designed to provide the Periodontics graduate students with an understanding of the relationship of the Oral Microbiota to disease; and to gain an understanding of the immunological responses involved in the pathogenesis of Periodontal Disease. Other topics considered are the etiology and the diagnostic methods of periodontal disease.

SYNOPSIS OF GOALS:
At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:

Analyse scientific papers in the field of oral microbiology and present a critical oral review of any assigned article
-
Understand the role of microbiology in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease.

Describe the more likely microbes present in various periodontopathy.
-
Discuss the nature and progress of periodontitis based on current knowledge
-
Appreciate the role of host resistance as it relates to the disease process
-
Organize and prepare a scientific review paper on an assigned topic in the field of oral microbiology
-
Discuss the role of immunologic reaction in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease |
Graduate student are expected
- to discuss and be thoroughly familiar with ALL reading assignments
-
Active participation in seminar discussion |

REQUIREMENTS: Students must satisfactorily complete the following requirements:
-
When assigned a paper from the current periodontal (microbiological) literature, be able to prepare a critical review of the paper to the standards established by the course instructor
When assigned a topic be able to:
Prepare a review of the literature on a format suitable for publication in the J. Periodontology
-
Prepare a reading list including the significant article from the current periodontal literature suitable for use as a lecture outline |

MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION: Judgment will be in the categories of preparation, professionalism, knowledge, participation during the seminar and on the completion of the assignment given to each student. |
