Advanced Periodontal Literature Seminar I & II

AVAILABILITY :           YEAR 1 & II

Course Description

This seminar is designed to provide the Periodontics graduate student with a well-rounded background in both current and historical literature.  The approach to study is topic oriented (thematic) and is directed toward concepts of preventive dentistry, periodontal diseases and periodontal therapeutics.

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course the student shall:
1.  When given a topic from the periodontal literature, be able to perform a Medlars search of the appropriate literature and prepare a reading list of library references consistent with the style used in the Journal of Periodontology.
2.  When assigned an article from the periodontal literature, be able to prepare a written abstract of the article consistent with the form and guidelines outlined in “How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper” by Day (1979) that is suitable for submission to the Journal of Periodontology or Periodontal Abstracts.
3. When given a scientific article, prepare an oral critique and deliver it to the satisfaction of the supervising faculty in which the following items are covered:

  1. Categorize the study as a descriptive, experimental or correlational.
  2. Define the purpose of the study and describe the method and materials used in the investigation and compare with previous studies.
  3. Summarize the study design using brackets to show how, where comparison between and within groups were made.
  4. Summarize the strengths and weaknesses of the study.
  5. Describe the clinical applications of the results of the study and compare those results with those of other investigators.

4. Demonstrate their knowledge of the periodontal literature by passing a written examination.

CONTENTS OF WEEKLY SEMINAR TOPICS

METHODOLOGY

For all seminars in the program, a reading list will be supplied for each weekly topic.  Papers prepared by the assigned student will be typewritten and copies given to the program coordinator, periodontics faculty and graduate students.  The assigned student will write a comprehensive paper on the subject and present it in the seminar.  All students will be responsible for being thoroughly familiar with all assigned literature.
