ANALYSIS OF A PIPE WITH UNIFORM LATERAL FLOW

The problem of estimating the friction head loss and the pressure at a general section of a pipe with uniform lateral flow is dealt with in this paper. Explicit friction coefficient formulas for laminar, turbulent flow in general and wholly rough turbulent flow are used to compute the friction head loss at a general pipe section. For the general case of turbulent flow the output of a numerical integration computer program is used in plotting non-dimensional charts for evaluating the friction head loss. Equations for estimating the pressure at a general pipe section, taking into account the effect of the change of momentum are pointed out. The effect of inclination of the pipe on both the friction head loss and the pressure is discussed. Finally, two numerical examples based on some field data are solved to show the practicability of the equations and charts.
