RESPONSE OF TOMATO CROPS TO SUB-IRRIGATION WITH

POROUS TUBES IN GREENHOUSES

An experiment was carried out on sandy loam soil in the greenhouse of the College of Agriculture, King Sand University. An automatic irrigation system was used in which water was applied under tensiometer control utilizing porous tubes at depths of 150 mm below the soil surface. Three irrigation treatments were tested, viz : porous tubes without mulch, mulched with a plastic cover and conventional manual irrigation without a mulch. The experiment was conducted on tomato crop. The results of the experiment showed that generally, there was a water saving of 11.4% in using the sub-irrigation technique with porous tubes. A greater water savings (52.6%) was achieved when the soil surface was covered with a plastic mulch. Higher yield was obtained using porous tubes as compared to manual watering.
