Course Number : NUR 361
Course Title : Principles of Learning and Teaching
Course Overview:
The major focus will be on principles of learning and the development and implementation of learner-oriented instructions. Emphasis will be placed on the process of teaching- learning strategies that are appropriate for achieving various types of instructional objectives. Concepts related to educational planning, selection and organization of learning experiences and evaluation methods are explained through the use of models, simulated work situations, learning exercises to enhance students' achievement of the course objectives.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course student should be able to:
1- Understand the principles of learning in order to design learner oriented units of instruction.
2- Develop skill in evaluating and critiquing several types of teaching methods.
3- Understand the principles of the teaching- learning process in order to act as an effective facilitator in achievement of group tasks.
4- Appreciate the use of appropriate media in the implementation of instructional strategies.
5- Become a ware of the various evaluation techniques and their relationship to various educational objectives.
Course requirements:
The course id divided into five units as outline in the syllabus. A list of learning tasks that constitute the activities of the course along with reading assignment and study materials will be offered in connection with each unit.
A term paper (lesson plan) is required to be completed in the last week of the semester. Criteria for writing the term paper will be given in class.

I. Principles of teaching and learning:
- Principles of learning.
- The teaching- Learning experiences.
- Characteristics of effective teaching- learning experiences.
II. Educational Planning and Instructional Strategies:
- Principles of educational planning.
- Instructional objectives.
- Instructional techniques; advantages and disadvantages: Lectures, Discussion/ Seminar/ Brain storming, Individualized learning, Learning through simulation.
- Learning through demonstration
- Relationship between the types of media and various types of objectives.
- Type of audio-visual technology.
III. Methods of evaluation:
- Definition of evaluation.
- Types of evaluation (formative/ summative)
- Advantages and disadvantages of various evaluation methods.
- Characteristics of examinations.
IV. Designing learning and instructional strategies:
- Planning and conducting classes.
- Development of a lesson plan.
- Clinical laboratory teaching.

Semester evaluation
Mid- term examinations 30%
Class participation and independent project 30%
Final Written Examination 40%
