Course Overview
The course provides the student with the opportunity to apply theoretical principles and concepts of primary health care to individuals attending primary health care centers. It focuses on promoting students competencies of assessing needs of families as a unit of care, environmental health and health assessment of targeted population.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1-Explore the concept, principles and elements of primary health care and different indicators as applied to family and community.
2-Understand the preventive aspects of family health and community.
2-Demonstrate skills in assessment and utilization of the nursing process to the care of individuals and families.
4-Appreciate the value of health for all.
Course Requirements:
This course will be taught by the use of lecture, discussion , demonstration and practical application. Students are expected to read before coming to class. Each student will be required to present one assignment and two health education classes. The time for presentation of assignments will be planned with the faculty members. Practical experience will be divided in community setting and mental settings.

1-Concept of primary health care: 2 hrs.

*World Health and related socio-economic problems.
2-Indicators and their use: 2 hrs.
*Definition of indicators,
*Use of indicators.
*Criteria for seleaction.
*Categories of indicators.
3-Family as a unit of service: 8 hrs.
*Types of families.
*Developmental stages of the family.
*Family functions.
*Family dynamics.
*Family care plan.
*Family crises and intervention.
4-Environmental Sanitation: 3 hrs.
*Water purification.
*Insect control.
*Sewage disposal.
*Garbage disposal.
*Food control.
*Control of occupation hazards.
Evaluation:
Semester evaluation :-
Mid-term examinations 20 %.
Assignment presentation 20 %.
Practical evaluation 30 %
-Final written examination 40 %.
