 CourseTitle:  MedicalSurgical Nursing      

 Credit Hours: 4hours (2theories+ 2Clinical)    

  Co-requisite:  NUR 230

  

 

Course Overview

   This course focuses on the management of major health concerns   among ill adults. It is designed to discuss the common problems encounter in the care of the ill adults. The course involves studying alternations in human functioning and care of patients with alterations   within the body systems. The focus is on the nursing care of medical- surgical patients experiencing disruptions in health status characterized by moderate intensity. Learning experiences include working with adults in ambulatory and acute setting.

 

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

1.      Comprehend the pathophysiology changes associated with alterations in various body systems.

2.      Apply the nursing process following NANDA classification in providing nursing care to adult patients with medical- surgical problems.

    3. Acquire competence in the care of patients experiencing common                 medical- surgical disorders.

4.      Participate in performing diagnostic and therapeutic measures  to patients experiencing disruptions of moderate intensity in    their health status.

 

Course Requirements

   Each student will be expected to submit a weekly nursing care plan    for different patients with different diagnosis as assigned. A nursing    assignment every two weeks concerning a clinical problem will be    required from every student.

II.    Care of the patient with neoplastic disorders

 Pathophysiology

 Medical and nursing intervention

III.     Pain management

 Nature of the problem

 Medical and nursing management

IV.   Perioperative nursing care

 Preoperative nursing care

 Intraoperative nursing care

 Postoperative nursing care

V.    Care of patient with fluid and electrolyte imbalances

   Fluid imbalance

   Electrolyte imbalance

   Acid-base imbalance

   Assessment and nursing care of fluid and electrolyte imbalance

VI.       Management of patients with cardiovascular disorders

  Assessment of the cardiovascular system

   Pathophysiology and electro- physiology of the heart

   Nursing care of patients with:

-         Dysrhythmias & conduction problem

-         Vulvular heart disease

-         Coronary artery disease

-         Hypertension

-         Heart failure

VII.    Management of patients with respiratory system disorders

  Nursing management of patient with upper airway problems

  Nursing management of patient with lower airway problems

VIII.  Management of patients with endocrine system disorders

       Hepatic ,gall bladder & liver disorders

       Diabetics Mellitus

IX. Management of patients with gastrointestinal system disorders

  Diagnostic tests of GIT

  Intestinal obstruction

  Gastritis

  Duodenal and gastric ulcers

  Appendicitis / appendectomy

 

Assignment:-

       Each student is responsible for making  one case presentation about her patient; she is responsible for caring in the hospital

       Perform the following with preceptor assistance:

·   Medical administration (oral, SC, 1M, IV).

·   Pre and post-operative care of assigned patients.

·   Dressing change.

       Carry out basic nursing interventions to assigned patients according to plan of care.

       Carry out specific nursing interventions according to patient care assignment.

       Communicate respectfully and courteously with patient, staff, relatives, colleagues, and

     other members of the caring team.

       Adhere to hospital policies and procedures in all patients' nursing care activities.

       Follow standard procedures in caring for patients prior to and following special

     investigation procedures in both (Medical and surgical units).

 

Student Evaluation:

       Assignment and reports                  

       Midterm written examination  20%

       Clinical practice  10%

       Final clinical examination  20%

       Final written examination  40%
