Translation in Natural Sciences

Objective:

This course is to examine with students the practical issues involved in advanced Natural Sciences  translation.  The students  will be familiar with various texts, issues and terminology in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, astronomy, geography…etc. This course also aims at introducing the students to practical translations issues in scientific fields and how to handle any problem.

This course is essentially practical in that it concentrates through regular home and class assignments followed by discussions of the students’ work, on translating representative and graded scientific texts.

Emphasis will be laid upon the development of students’ autonomy and problem-solving abilities.

 

Contents:

1.                        Translation of Chemistry texts

2.                        Translation of Physics texts

3.                        Translation of Geography texts

4.                        Translation of astronomy texts

5.                        Translation of metrology texts

 

Assessment Scheme:

First Exam                                                                                                25%

Second Exam                                                                                            25%

Courses Fall 2007/2008

 

Translation in the Field of Commerce

 

Objective:

This course is to examine with students the practical issues involved in advanced commercial translation. The students will have an opportunity to learn and share among themselves useful translation procedures through practical translation.

This course is essentially practical in that it concentrates through regular home and class assignments followed by discussions of the students’ work, on translating representative and graded commercial texts.

Emphasis will be laid upon the development of students’ autonomy and problem-solving abilities.

 

Contents:

1.                        Translation of commercial and trade texts

2.                        Translation of Banking texts

3.                        Translation of budgets and financial reports

4.                        Translation of Money market texts

5.                        Translation of Free Trade and GATT texts..

 
Assessment Scheme:

Translation in the field of Petroleum

 

Objective:

This course is to examine with students the practical issues involved in Petroleum  translation. The students will have an opportunity to learn the various steps that the industry of Petroleum passes through starting from prospecting to oil markets and the political and economic  impact of oil industry.

This course is essentially practical in that it concentrates through regular home and class assignments followed by discussions of the students’ work, on translating representative and graded  petroleum texts.

Emphasis will be laid upon the development of students’ autonomy and problem-solving abilities.

 

Contents:

1.                        Translation of prospecting oil texts

2.                        Translation of drilling texts

3.                        Translation of off shore drilling texts

4.                        Translation of transporting oil texts

5.                        Translation of refining oil texts

6.                        Translation of oil market (prices, shares…etc.)
