Purpose
This clinical course focuses on application of nursing process as a framework for care of adult individuals in the fields of chronic and long term care facilities as well as intensive care unit. The practicum provides the student with an opportunity to function in the role of clinical specialist as advanced nurse practitioner by performing assessment skills, interpreting findings, applying laboratory diagnostic methods, identification of actual , potential and collaborative health problem, developing plans of care & implementing nursing strategies to promote personal, cognitive & physical health of clients .Students select a specific adult medical-surgical patient population for concentration in this course.
Course plan
This is a three credits course for clinical practice, 9hours /week over a 12-week period
Units in course
Unit I: Cardiac-surgery intensive care unit in KFSH (6weeks)
Unit II: Medical-surgical intensive care unit in KFSH (6weeks)
Course objectives
At the completion of the course the student will be able to:
1- Analyze pathophysiologic concepts related to the management of adults experiencing acute and episodic chronic health problems.
2- Perform comprehensive health history and physical assessments on the acute / chronic ill adult with selected health problems.
3- Formulate diagnosis and collaborative management plans of care.
4- Evaluate the care of the acute/ chronic ill client selected health problems.
5- Demonstrate culturally sensitive communication skills with client and family members.
6- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team and consumers to achieve shared health care goals.
7- Integrate into clinical practice theoretical frameworks appropriate to the care of the acutely/ chronic ill client and family members
8- Discuss research findings related to the management of acute /chronic ill adult clients with selected health problems
9- Demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills when formulating diagnosis and plans of care acutely/ critically ill client selected health problems.
Teaching personnel:
Teaching of the course is a collaborative effort of faculty with expertise in the physiological and psychosocial dimensions of care of adults with health problems.
Teaching Strategies:
- Provide evidence of advanced practice nursing competency in performing health assessments and implementing collaborative management plans for clients with acute / critical health problem.
- Integrate applicable theoretical frameworks in clients and family encounters.
- Identify and communicate with the preceptor weekly about the guidance assessment sheet and fulfilling course objectives.
- Clinical written assignments will be written by the students at the end of each unit. (Three Written assignment)
Evaluation:
Three clinical written assignments will be required from the student including critical thinking, analytical skills and research findings, in addition to a preceptor's evaluation.
