                            Course Title : Medical-Surgical Nursing

I- Course Description:

The Medical Surgical course is focus on the management of major health concerns among ill adults. It is designed to discuss the common problems encountered in the care of the ill adults.

The course involves studying alterations in human functioning and care of patients with alterations within the body systems. The focus is on the nursing care of medical surgical patients experiencing disruptions in health status characterized by moderate intensity. Learning experiences include working with adults in ambulatory and acute settings.

 

 

 

II- Course Objectives:

By the end of the course the student will be able to:

1- Comprehend the pathophysiological changes associated with alterations in various body systems.

2- Apply the nursing process following NANDA classification in providing nursing care to adult patients with medical surgical problems.

3- Acquire competence in the care of patients experiencing common medical surgical disorders.

4- Participate in performing diagnostic and therapeutic measures to patients experiencing disruptions of moderate intensity in their health status.

II-Care of the Patient with Neoplastic Disorders:

- Pathophysiology.

-Medical and nursing management.

III-Pain Management:                                                                

- Nature of the problem. Medical and nursing management.

IV- Care of the Patient with Fluid and Electrolyte Imbalances:                                                                               

-Fluid imbalances.

-Electrolyte imbalances.

- Acid-base imbalance.

- Assessment and nursing care of fluid and electrolyte imbalances.

V.Preoperative Nursing care:                                                    

-Preoperative nursing care.

-Intraoperative nursing care

-Postoperative nursing care.

VI- Management of Patients with Cardiovascular Disorders:  

- Assessment of the cardiovascular system.

- Pathophysiology and electro-physiology of the heart.

- Nursing care of patients with :

1- Structure problems:

- Valvular heart disease.

- Vascular problems. (hypertension)

           2- Function problems"

- Angina pectoris, myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure

- Dysrhythmias and coronary artery disease.

VII- Management of patients with respiratory system disruptions:

- Assessment of the respiratory systems.                                                          

- Nursing management of patients with upper airway problems.

- Nursing management of patients with lower airway problems

VIII- Management of Patients with Endocrine System Disruptions.

-Assessment of the endocrine and hepatic systems

- Hepatic, gall bladder, and liver disorders.

- Diabetes mellitus.

IX-Management of Patients with Gastrointestinal System Disruptions:   6 hrs.

- Assessment of the gastrointestinal system.

- Diagnostic tests of GIT.

 - Etiology and pathophysiology of common GIT ulcers.

- Nursing care of patients with GIT problems such as:

- Gastritis.

 - Duodenal and gastric ulcers.   -Appendicitis / appendectomy.
