Course Overview:

        The course provides the opportunity to increase skills in application of the nursing process to the care of patients in emergency situations. The clinical expectations will focus on nursing interventions appropriate to patients with various emergency problems. This will take place in emergency and accident settings.  

Course Objectives:

           At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

1.      Acquire competency in assessing patients in emergency situations by completing a primary and secondary survey properly.

2.      Demonstrate skills in performing physical examination on patients in emergency situations.

3.      Provides appropriate care to patients with multiple injuries in a calm, efficient and professional manner.

4.      Intervene in situations where life support systems are threatened and provide emergency care in compliance with unit regulatory policies and practice.

5.      Demonstrate a level of communication and professionalism appropriate for the emergency room functioning and practices.

6.      Comply with hospital policies and procedures in triaging patients and in ambulance run.

 Course Requirements:

              The course is organized in a manner that integrates theoretical concepts with application. Work sessions are planned in away that permits active involvement of students in actual emergency cases that are directly oriented to the achievement of course objectives. Clinical practice will take place in acute care organizations. The objectives, learning strategies, learning materials and evaluation strategies will be provided with each teaching session.  

Evaluation:

             Evaluations of students will be based on their participation and involvement throughout the work sessions and on the quality and efficiency of care provided following steps of the nursing process.
