COURSE SYLLABUS

 

Course Title            :              PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY - I

Course Number     :             DEH 343

Credit Hours           :            2 + 0 = 2

Pre-Requisite         :             DEH 241

 

Course Description:

Philosophy and practice of prevention in dentistry, emphasis on diet and nutrition, the use of fluoride, regular visits to the dentist and effective home care procedures.

 

Objectives: 

  1.  The student should be capable of listing strategies used to educate patients on the importance of dental health and demonstrate techniques for oral health care including the proper use of toothbrush, dental floss and oral rinses.
  2.  The student should be able to indicate the elements of a successful plaque control program and describe the importance of fluoride in dentistry and public health and also indicate the relationship of nutrition to dental health.

Course Outline:

An overview of the course with its requirements

Week  1

Oral infection control: all types of  tooth brushes and tooth brushing techniques

Week  2

Oral infection control:  types of  tooth brushes and tooth brushing techniques

Week  3

Inter-dental care and chemotherapy (types used for different patients)

Week  4

Inter-dental care and chemotherapy(all types used for different patients)

Week  5

Mid-term exam 1.

Week  6

Diet and dietary assessment and counseling.

Week  7

Health promotion and disease prevention

Week  8

Mid-term exam 2

Week  9

Indices and scoring methods: individual assessment score, clinical trial and for epidemiologic survey. Indices such as periodontal screening and recording, plaque index, simplified oral hygiene index, gingival bleeding index, gingival index, community periodontal index of treatment needs, decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth surfaces, decayed, indicated for extraction and filled teeth for surfaces and teeth for deciduous teeth.

Week  10
